Atlanta Braves superstar first baseman Freddie Freeman will be taking a trip to the DL for “approximately 10 weeks” after being struck in his left wrist by a 94 MPH fastball from Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Loup. Ken Rosenthal reported that the wrist will not require surgery.
Freeman went out on a tear in the 2017 season clubbing 14 home runs (tied for first in MLB) with a slash line of .341/.461/.748. Freeman would have most likely been voted into the All-Star Game (he was on my ballot) and being one of the top players in the National League, he would most likely be a frontrunner and possible winner of the 2017 NL MVP.
The Braves released the following statement on Freeman’s injury.
Freddie Freeman just recently addressed the media regarding the matter…
Freeman stated in the interview that the pitch was unintentional (which it was) and it was just an accident. This accident is most likely going to keep Freddie out for 2-3 months, which will pretty much kill his 2017 season.
This also puts the Braves in a really bad spot as well, Freeman and Kemp made for one of the best one-two punches in the NL and without Freeman, the already weak hitting Braves are going to have many issues offensively, especially with his replacement, Rio Ruiz, not being that much of an offensive threat and First Round Overall Draft Pick Dansby Swanson struggling this season, the Braves and Braves fans are going to have a rough few months without Freeman. The Braves had a saying a long while back that went like this, “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain” now, it looks like braves fans will be praying for rain for “approximately 10 weeks”.
Let’s all hope that Freeman’s recovery is quick so that we get to see a lot more of him in 2017.
