In the last 8 days, there have been 2 immaculate innings in the MLB, and now we have a third. First came Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning for the Red Sox, then came Max Scherzer in the fifth inning for the Nationals, and now, on May 18, 2017, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen threw an immaculate inning in the ninth to complete a 4-out save.

An immaculate inning occurs when a pitcher throws 9 pitches in an inning and gets three strikeouts.

Jansen came in in the top of the eighth inning with runners on first and second to shut down J.T. Realmuto with 2 outs. He struck him out looking and the game went to the bottom of the eighth with the Dodgers leading 5-2.

Jansen hit for himself in the bottom of the eighth and hit an infield single off the glove of the diving Justin Bour to load the bases. The Dodgers ended up tacking on 2 runs in that inning to bring the score to 7-2.

Jansen came in in the ninth to finish off the save and did something that has only been done 84 times in MLB history and 4 times in 2017. He pitched an immaculate inning.

Jansen struck out Derek Dietrich, J.T. Riddle, and Ichiro Suzuki to end the game.

Surprisingly, the record for most immaculate innings in a season is 7 and we are more than halfway there before the All-Star Break. Jansen joins Drew Storen, Craig Kimbrel, and Max Scherzer as the only pitchers in 2017 thus far to accomplish the feat.
