The Dodgers have been on an insane run winning 70 games and losing just 31 in 2017. While the Cubs have finally caught up to the Brewers in the division and with added help of Jose Quintana they don’t look like they are slowing down. There is one thing that both teams have in common…they want a starting pitcher before the trade deadline and they have both shown interest in Justin Verlander.
The Dodgers just recently received news that ace Clayton Kershaw would be out four to six weeks with a grade 1 strain in his back. Kershaw has been one of the main contributors to the Dodgers Success with 15 wins and just 2 losses thus far. The Dodgers may want to add Justin Verlander to their staff to fill in for Kershaw as they go into the postseason. While Kershaw may be returning sooner than later the Dodgers may want him as insurance just in case.
Along with that, the Dodgers have the highest payroll in baseball and would have no problem taking over the 28 million per year from 2017 till 2019 and the 22 million dollar vesting option if he finishes top 5 in the Cy Young voting in 2019. Verlander also may want to go to the Dodgers as they are contenders while the Tigers are not, the money is right along with, most likely, a World Series ring.
As for the Cubs, they are battling it out with the Brewers for the division and despite their acquisition of Jose Quintana, they may be looking for a pitcher to give them the edge over their new rivals. Although going with a pitcher with a 5-7 win loss record, a 4.50 ERA and a 1.444 WHIP with around $75 million guaranteed on his contract may be a strange decision on the Cubs part. It would definitely be a gamble for the Cubs and it is definitely a high-risk high reward deal.
So now it is time for you, the reader, to tell me what you think will happen. Will the reigning World Series Champions pick up Verlander? Will the Dodgers? Or will he stay right where he is due to his less impressive stats and the massive amount of money that any team that trades for him will have to inherit? I believe that the Dodgers will trade for Verlander and he will finally win his first World Series ring of his career.
