Baltimore Orioles starter Kevin Gausman accomplished a rare and interesting feat in the 7th inning of Monday’s game against the Cleveland Indians by throwing an immaculate inning. Gausman is just the 85th pitcher to throw at least 1 immaculate inning and Gausman’s was the 90th immaculate inning in Major League history.
An immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out three consecutive batters on 9 consecutive pitches in an inning.
Gausman fanned Yonder Alonso, Yan Gomes, and Bradley Zimmer in the top of the seventh inning at Camden Yards to get the O’s back to the dugout. Gausman became the first Orioles pitcher to throw an immaculate inning since B.J. Ryan on September 5, 1999, against the Cleveland Indians and is the first pitcher to accomplish the feat since Rick Porcello on August 9, 2017, against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Despite Kevin Gausman’s efforts, the Baltimore Orioles still lost the game 2-1 to the Cleveland Indians after Gausman went 8 innings while giving up two runs on 4 hits with a walk and 7 strikeouts. Gausman now has a 4.66 ERA in 29 innings pitched in 2018 thus far. The Baltimore Orioles sit at the bottom of the powerhouse American League East with a 6-17 record.
