The Oakland Athletics acquired pitcher Mike Fiers from the Tigers in exchange for two players to be named later or cash considerations on Wednesday. The Oakland A’s designated pitcher Jeremy Bleich for assignment in order to create a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for Fiers.
Fiers has been solid in 2018, pitching his way to a 3.48 ERA in 119 innings across 21 starts. Fiers will most likely be put in the back end of the Oakland A’s starting rotation as they push for the second Wild Card Spot. The Oakland A’s also currently trail the American League West Division-leading Houston Astros by 4 games and Fiers will definitely help the A’s in their pursuit of the reigning World Series Champions.
The Detroit Tigers are currently one of the worst teams in baseball and the additional prospects and cash will help the team build for the future. Mike Fiers will now get to play for a contender once again after being non-tendered by the Astros in December of 2017 and being picked up by the Tigers. Wouldn’t it be something if he helped the Athletics overthrow the Astros in the Division? What perfect revenge that would be for giving up on him after he helped them to a World Series title?
