Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez got three outs on three consecutive three-pitch strikeouts in the top of the fourth inning during Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marquez had thrown what is called an “Immaculate Inning.”
Marquez fanned Corey Dickerson, Starling Marte, and Gregory Polanco in the process of achieving the rare feat. An immaculate inning is when a pitcher strikes out three consecutive batters on 9 consecutive pitches in an inning.
Marquez became the 3rd pitcher of 2018 to pitch an Immaculate Inning, following superstar starting pitcher Max Scherzer in the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 5 and Baltimore Orioles starter Kevin Gausman in the seventh inning 23 against the Cleveland Indians. 2017 was a record-setting year for the feat with 8 Immaculate Innings being thrown in the year that mainly consisted of strikeouts and home runs.
German Marquez entered Wednesday’s start with a 4.70 ERA in 122 2/3 innings. After the immaculate inning, Marquez went on to allow three runs on eight hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in four innings versus the Pittsburgh Pirates.
