The Minnesota Twins announced on Thursday that they had traded closer Fernando Rodney to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league pitcher Dakota Chalmers.
Fernando Rodney (who interestingly enough actually follows Doubleday Double Talk’s Official Instagram page) has pitched well for the Twins in 2018, posting a solid 25 saves with a 3.09 ERA in 43 2/3 innings. The veteran right-hander is currently owed the remainder of his $4.25 million salary for the 2018 Major League Baseball season. Rodney’s contract also has a club option for 2019 worth $4.25 million with a $250,000 buyout.
Dakota Chalmers was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. Chalmers was not rated among the Athletics’ Top-30 prospects by MLB Pipeline during his tenure with the club. Dakota has only pitched five innings this season with Single-A Beloit, but he could be a solid trade chip for the 2019 season at some point.
The Oakland A’s have had an incredible run that has dethroned the Seattle Mariners for the Second Wild Card spot and the A’s are currently stockpiling pitching for the long haul. The Twins have been disappointing this season and were sellers at the deadline.
