The New York Mets made yet another fantastic deal to continue their incredible offseason on Friday by signing former Oakland A’s’ second baseman Jed Lowrie to a two-year, $20 Million deal.
jed Lowrie was given his first career All-Star nod in 2018 and set career-bests in noumerous major offensive categories including home runs with 23 runs batted in with 99. The veteran infielder has a good deal of experience playing shortstop, second base, and third base which makes him a versatile and valuable asset.
Mets rookie General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen continues to do great things this offseason and doing exactly what a big market New York team should be doing in the offseason, spend and spend big. Van Wagenen has added star second baseman Robinson Canó, star closer Edwin Díaz, stud reliever Jeurys Familia, Keon Broxton, J.D. Davis, and All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos.
The Mets had a disappointing season in 2018 in which they finished fourth place in the National League East. The only bright spot of the season was Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom who only went 10-9 with a 1.71 ERA due to lack of run support. To put the greatness of deGrom and the ineptitude of the Mets offense in 2018 into perspective, if the Mets had scored four runs in each of deGrom’s starts, he would have gone 30-0, with three runs per start, deGrom would have gone 25-1, if the Mets had scored just two runs, deGrom would have still gone 20-6. With these new offseason acquisitions, the Mets star-studded pitching staff is sure to have far more run support than they have had in a long time.
The Mets now have a very crowded infield and with Lowrie’s acquisition, something has to give. There is a good possibility that Todd Frazier or Dominic Smith will be traded with there simply not being enough space in the infield. With Cano being able to play second, third, or first and Lowrie being able to play shortstop, second, and third, the two-second baseman should not have too much of a conflict, but one will have to move.
As far as Lowrie’s former team, the Oakland A’s, are concerned, Lowrie was one of the key pieces that led them to a surprising 97 win season in 2018 en route to a second Wild card spot behind the New York Yankees. While the A’s lost the Wild Card Game, they were not even expected to finish the season any higher than fourth in the division, making the feat all the more incredible. It was a questionable decision to say the least for Oakland to not resign Lowrie after the best season of his career and the decision to let Lowrie walk in free agency will be the Mets gain and Oakland’s loss.
Jed Lowrie will give the Mets yet another star infielder to go with their already insanely crowded infield and Jed Lowrie will have security for the next two years as he attempts to recapture the magic from last year as the Mets attempt to make the playoffs out of the revamped National League East.
