Christian Yelich came to the plate in the bottom of the first inning in Sunday’s game between the Brewers and Cardinals and with a 0-1 count from Cardinals’ starter Michael Wacha, Yelich ripped a 408-foot bomb over the right field wall for his fourth home run in as many games. Yelich had homered in each of the previous three games and with the home run, tied the record for the most consecutive games with a home run to begin the season.

Christian Yelich became just the sixth player in Major League history to hit a home run in each of the first four games of the season, joining Trevor Story in 2016, Chris Davis in 2013, Nelson Cruz in 2011, Mark McGwire in 1998, and Willie Mays in 1971 as the only players to ever accomplish the feat. In franchise history, no Milwaukee Brewer has ever opened a season with four consecutive games with a home run and no reigning Most Valuable Player Award recipient has ever done this before either.

“He’s on another planet, man,” Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff said Saturday. “He’s so special. Just watching him, he’s so balanced. He’s not fooled that much. He’s on time with pretty much everything. It’s pretty cool to watch.”

The Brewers would go on to be victorious once again over their division rivals in yet another rubber match that ended in a 5-4 Brewers’ win after Christian Yelich (who else?) came up in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at four and hit a walk-off double to win the game. The Brewers will now improve to 3-1 on the short season while the Cardinals will fall to 1-3.

“It was definitely a cool series,” Yelich said. “It was a great series for us. They’re a great team. They play us really well. These games were tight. You’ve got to execute to win them.”

The Brewers will face the Reds in Cincinnati next with Yelich getting the opportunity to become the first player to ever homer in five consecutive games to begin a season in Major League Baseball history on Monday.

Despite his incredible success since being traded from the Miami Marlins, Yelich continues to stay humble and tries his best to stay in the present.

“I’m really just trying to be present in the day, no matter if it goes good or bad the night before,” Yelich said. “Just reset and stay disciplined with your cage work with your team during [batting practice]. Just focus on each day as its own solo [thing], I guess you could say. Don’t get hung up on the past or the future.”

Christian Yelich received high praise from manager Craig Counsell who commended Yelich before Sunday’s series finale.

“If you get to understand and to know [Yelich], he’s very competitive,” Counsell said. “It doesn’t come across right away, because there is a lot of humility there and he’s not outspoken about things, generally. But he’s very competitive. I think he’s taken this all as a challenge and used it to his advantage.”

If Yelich continues to stay in the zone like this, another National League MVP Award is in the foreseeable future for the superstar and with his help, the Milwaukee Brewers are making a statement to the rest of their division that they are back and better than ever, and so is Christian Yelich.
